How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: Don’t Panic, Just PASS

A fire emergency can happen anywhere, at your office, in your home, or at your workplace. In that critical moment, knowing how to use a fire extinguisher correctly can mean the difference between a contained incident and a devastating disaster.

Many people have fire extinguishers but have never actually used one. Simply owning one isn’t enough; you need the knowledge and confidence to operate it effectively. This guide will walk you through the simple, universally accepted technique for using a fire extinguisher: the PASS method.

Safety First: Only attempt to fight a fire if it is small and contained, you have a clear escape route behind you, and you are confident in your ability to operate the extinguisher. If in doubt, evacuate immediately and call the fire department.

Before You Begin: The Quick Readiness Check

Before you even touch the extinguisher, perform a swift mental check. We call this the “3 A’s Check”:

  1. Alarm: Have you activated the fire alarm and alerted others?

  2. Assist: Have you ensured everyone is starting to evacuate?

  3. Attack: Is the fire small, contained, and not spreading? Is your extinguisher the right type for the fire?

If you’ve checked these boxes, you are ready to PASS.

The PASS Method: Your 4-Step Guide to Using a Fire Extinguisher

PASS is an easy-to-remember acronym that stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Watch the video below for a visual demonstration, and then follow our detailed breakdown.

P – PULL the Pin

  • What it does: This unlocks the operating lever and prepares the extinguisher for use.

  • How to do it: Hold the extinguisher upright and pull the metal pin straight out. You may need to break a small plastic seal first. This step ensures the extinguisher doesn’t discharge accidentally.

A – AIM the Nozzle at the Base of the Fire

  • What it does: Directs the extinguishing agent to the fuel source, not the flames.

  • How to do it: Crouch low and aim the nozzle or hose at the very bottom of the fire. Targeting the flames themselves is a common mistake. You must cut off the fire’s fuel supply to put it out effectively.

S – SQUEEZE the Lever Slowly and Evenly

  • What it does: Releases the extinguishing agent.

  • How to do it: Squeeze the handles together to discharge the chemical. Use a controlled, steady motion to avoid wasting the agent.

S – SWEEP from Side to Side

  • What it does: Covers the entire base of the fire to prevent re-ignition.

  • How to do it: While continuing to aim at the base, sweep the nozzle from side to side, moving closer as the flames diminish. Continue until the fire is completely out.

Watch for Reflash: Keep an eye on the area even after the fire is out, as it can re-ignite.

After Using the Fire Extinguisher

  1. Do Not Touch the Extinguisher: It will be extremely hot.

  2. Evacuate Immediately: Even if you think the fire is out, leave the building and ensure everyone else does too. Wait for the fire department to arrive and confirm it is safe.

  3. Get it Recharged: All used fire extinguishers must be professionally recharged or replaced immediately.
