What is a CO2 fire extinguisher used for?

A carbon dioxide extinguisher puts out fires in electrical equipment and in flammable liquids such as petrol, paint and solvents. The gas does not conduct electricity and leaves no residue, so it is the usual choice for offices, server rooms, laboratories, workshops and generator rooms.

Where it belongs

Where to Keep a CO2 Fire Extinguisher

Put it beside the equipment that could start the fire, close to the exit.

Server rooms and data centres

CO2 leaves no powder or water behind, so computers and network gear are not ruined by the cure.

Offices and electrical rooms

Next to switchboards, distribution boards and the printing and IT corner of an office.

Workshops and factories

Beside machines, control panels and areas where oils, paints and solvents are used.

Generators and engine rooms

Fuel and electrical fires meet here. CO2 handles both.

Laboratories and clinics

Clean discharge near equipment and flammable liquids, with nothing to wipe up.

Vehicles and fuel stores

Small fuel and engine fires, kept close to hand in a company vehicle or a store.

Choose the right type

CO2, Dry Powder, Water and Foam Compared

No single extinguisher is right for every fire. Most workplaces keep more than one type.

Know it before you need it

How to Use a CO2 Fire Extinguisher

  1. 1

    Pull the pin

Break the tamper seal and pull out the safety pin.

  2. 2

Aim the horn at the base

Point the horn at the base of the flames, from a safe distance. Hold the plastic handle, never the metal horn.

  3. 3

    Squeeze the lever

Press the lever to release the gas. CO2 is cold and the discharge is short, so keep your aim steady.

  4. 4

    Sweep side to side

Move the horn across the base of the fire until it is out, then back away and check for reignition.

Raise the alarm and leave the building if the fire is bigger than you can handle, or if you do not feel safe. Our free fire training for your staff covers this in practice.

Keep it ready

Looking After a CO2 Extinguisher

Weigh it, do not look for a gauge

A CO2 extinguisher has no pressure gauge. Its weight shows whether it is still full, so it is checked by weighing.

Service it every year

Have it inspected and weighed at least once a year, and after any use, even a short burst.

Mount it where people can reach it

Keep it near the exit and near the equipment it protects, clear of boxes and stock, with a sign above it.

Take care in small rooms

CO2 pushes air out of a small closed room. Ventilate the room after use and do not stay in it.

CO2 Fire Extinguisher Questions

How much is a CO2 fire extinguisher in Kenya?

CO2 fire extinguishers at Safety Hub currently cost from KSh 4,000 to KSh 7,000, depending on size. The 2 kg size costs the least and the 5 kg size costs more because it holds more gas. The price list on this page is read from our shop, so it shows today's prices.

What is a CO2 fire extinguisher used for?

A carbon dioxide extinguisher puts out fires in electrical equipment and in flammable liquids such as petrol, paint and solvents (Class B). The gas is not conductive and leaves no residue, so it suits offices, server rooms, laboratories, workshops and generator rooms.

Can I use a CO2 extinguisher on an electrical fire?

Yes. CO2 does not conduct electricity, so it is a standard choice for fires in electrical equipment. If it is safe to do so, switch off the power as well, and keep the gas moving across the base of the fire. Stay a safe distance away from live equipment.

Is a CO2 extinguisher good for fires in wood, paper or cloth?

Not on its own. CO2 works by displacing oxygen and cooling, and a fire in ordinary materials can reignite once the gas clears. Use water, foam or a dry powder extinguisher for those fires, and keep CO2 beside your electrical equipment.

Why does a CO2 extinguisher have no pressure gauge?

The gas is stored as a liquid under high pressure, so a gauge would not show how much is left. It is checked by weighing the cylinder and comparing it with the weight marked on it.

Why is the horn of a CO2 extinguisher dangerous to hold?

The gas turns very cold as it leaves the horn. Touching the horn during or just after use can cause cold burns, so hold the extinguisher only by the handle.

Is it safe to use a CO2 extinguisher in a small room?

Use it with care. CO2 displaces air, and in a small closed room it can leave too little oxygen to breathe comfortably. Discharge it, step out, ventilate the room and do not go back in until it has cleared.

Do you refill CO2 fire extinguishers?
